Paying developers, marketing, research and development are all very expensive and ongoing expenses to support great software. Customer support is a major expense and is ongoing. There is a misconception that software is a digital product, so it costs nothing to sell an additional copy. Then it gets discontinued, like iWeb, and customers will get put into a similar position where the software they love is no longer supported and may stop working. If a company can't make money off their software there is less of a reason to continue updating it. As a customer, you may think that's a good thing, but it's really not. Some are important for security, but some, in my opinion, are not needed and can hurt the overall functionality of the software.ħ. There are some restrictions to App Store Apps. We don't know who they are so we can't email them and we can't even respond on the review board either.Ħ. Many people don't realize they can email (or call) us directly and may leave negative reviews that can hurt future sales and our reputation. We can't respond to customer reviews on the App Store. I don't think that's fair to customers and most don't realize this.ĥ. We can't refund App Store purchases (because of issue 2 above) and even if we sent a cheque separately, we would lose out on the 30%. There is only a 7 day refund policy for App Store purchases. Likewise a customer may buy from the App Store than try to download from our website and get frustrated when the software doesn't recognize their purchase.Ĥ. Meanwhile customers get angry when we release a version on our site before the App Store version but sometimes we have no control over that. There is a review process that can take anywhere from a few days, to sometimes more than a month to get an update in the App Store. But there is no way for us to get it automatically so it makes management really difficult.ģ. For some of our products in the App Store, we get customers who get angry when they learn we don't have their purchase in our database. That means we don't know who bought our software. Apple doesn't share the purchaser details with the software company. There are many concerns with it though.Ģ. In our case we would like to get EverWeb to the App Store. I'll be giving the Free demo of WebAcapella a whirl first, methinks. Reviews are mixed, with some complaining that it requires too much delving into code and/or extra packs for real functionality (I'm assuming these latter are people to boneheaded to adapt a template for their own use, but I don't know).ĭear Hivemind: what is the current state? Is there an obvious and well-loved option for iWeb refugees? A free or cheap web-based tool that is perfect for me? Even a drop-in replacement, perchance, that is able to take my existing site and import it (not that this is necessary it's mostly just a placeholder, anyway…)? RapidWeaver, which is a price I'm willing to spend, but only if I'm sure it's what I actually need. Freeway Express, which has gruelling reviews… EverWeb, whose own website won't work properly in Safari on my machine, which makes me a little leery… WebAcapella, which looks the most promising from where I'm currently sitting, and €80 is okay if it's good and really easy and doesn't produce shit. I've been looking around a bit, and so far I've found Something like iWeb was perfect for me: operated much like Pages or any other WYSIWYG layouter/text processor, easily tasteful - though I understand that the code was messy. I'd like to keep it independent of any one provider, so apps or web interfaces tied to a specific hosting service are out. I'm dumb as nails when it comes to web design and really don't have time to delve into coding. I've got a really, really simple one-page website that I built in iWeb a long time ago, and I'm looking at a replacement app to build something really simple - just a main page with four or five sub-pages of content (bio, references, media, that kind of thing).
